Frequently Asked Questions

We get a lot of valid questions from you folks. We hope this FAQ helps!
  1. What's taking so long for my skin to get published? Should I resubmit it?
Skins get reviewed and published in the order they are received, so at certain times when a lot of people get skinning, (eg. weekends, spring break, holidays) we receive more skins per day than we can review. This leads to a backlog and unfortunately, a delay. Submitting it again will not make the review process go any faster, and in fact slows it down.

  2. What the heck is your rating system, anyway?
5 Stars: Skins that you CAN'T live without. They are complete; Every window done, window shade, cursors, the works. Absolutely flawless in every single way and are works of art in the Michaelangelo sense. Five star skins are automatically added to the Best skins category.
4 Stars: Great runners up, but just didn't make the final cut for one reason or another. Almost perfect. Maybe missing a component or two. They show time and effort spent in creating a great skin, but it's just not worthy of being in the the Best skins category.
3 Stars: Average skins. These authors show potential, and with positive feedback could possibly go on to create great skins.
2 Stars: Sub-par skins. They probably just changed the buttons or slapped a pic on the main and eq windows. Most of the time, these are generated by an "easy skinner" program without any additional hand tweaking. They get some points for effort, but doesn't quite cut it.
1 Star: Failed skin. Same as a 0, but with a little something extra. Most of these are skins with the main window skinned and nothing else. A lot of times, a beginner will act too hastily and submit a skin before it is ready.
0 Stars: Not worth reviewing. Skins that obviously took less than 5 minutes to create. Anything that hurts us to look at will receive this unholy rating.

  3. Why did my skin get rejected?
If it was rejected, it probably had some objectionable material in it. Nudity, hate propaganda, slander, blackmail, outright stealing of another person's skin, cruelty to llamas and other bad things will definitely lead to rejection. If we think it was an honest mistake, we'll try to contact the author and correct the situation. Otherwise, it's straight to the recycle bin.

  4. Some of the skin coordinates are wrong. Can you guys fix them?
In a word, no. Due to lack of quality assurance back in the days when Winamp was still shareware, a number of coordinate glitches seeped into the release version. Before we could correct them, people had already begun making skins left and right. If we make these fixes now, we will effectively render our thousands of skins obsolete. Fortunately, the errors are minor and easily worked around.

  5. What is the Winamp Skin "Easter Egg"?
All we can tell you is... it does exist. When Mike found it, he spent the whole day checking his old skins. Crazy llama :)

  6. My skin is almost ready, can I submit a "beta" version to see if it will get a good review before I submit the complete version?
Sorry, we treat all skins received as ready-to-publish. You can read the above criteria for a pretty good indication of what our reviewers will think. You can also subscribe to the Skinning Forums to access the wisdom of the Skinning community for peer reviews, or check out some Skinning Tips and Tricks.

  7. I don't know if I submitted the skin correctly. Can one of you guys submit it for me?
Sadly, we no longer have access to the resource database. So even if you emailed us your skin, there isn't much we can do for you.

  8. Hey, some guy just ripped off my skin and I will not rest until I exact revenge. How may I smite the lousy bastard?
Don't get violent son. Our forum moderators are serving as judge and jury for those who disrespect your skin jobs. Look here for guidelines on reporting rip offs.
